MACA History

Founded in 1996, MACA is a local, state, and national resource.

Founded in 1996, MACA has become the local, state, and national go-to resource for helping victims of child abuse. In the Commonwealth, we continue to see tremendous progress in the statewide response to child abuse. Each year we move closer and closer to an environment where children are free from sexual, physical, and emotional abuse and neglect. Click ‘start’ to explore our timeline below!

MACA History

2018
MACA awarded Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant
MACA was awarded a Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) grant through the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance (MOVA) for FY’2019-FY’2020, to support the Statewide CSEC Service Enhancement Project. The project will support a dedicated CSEC Case Manager position at each CAC to coordinate the multidisciplinary team response to at-risk and sexually exploited children.
2017
MACA hosts our 2nd Annual CAC Awareness Day

MACA hosts our 2nd Annual CAC Awareness Day at the State House, and our 7th Annual Statewide Conference, which featured keynote speakers Olympic Gold Medalist, Kayla Harrison, and Assistant US State’s Attorney, Kevin Mulcahy.

2016
MACA’s 6th Annual Statewide Conference

MACA’s 6th Annual Statewide Conference features keynote speaker, Dr. Vincent Felitti, principal investigator of the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study. MACA also held our first annual State House CAC Awareness Day.

MACA Convenes Our First Annual Statewide Conference

MACA Hires Program Coordinator

MACA Opens First Office

MACA welcomes our first Executive Director and opens the first office at 14 Beacon Street.

2004
MACA Acquires 501(c)3 Status

2004/2005 MACA acquires 501(c)3 status, and embarks on six month strategic planning session with pro-bono services from Bain and Co.

MACA marks our official inauguration and commemorates the 20th anniversary of landmark child abuse reporting legislation.

CACs, SAIN Team Up For Statewide Coalition

CACs, SAIN teams and other representatives from allied organizations create a vision and action plan for an effective statewide coalition.

MACA Recognized as First State Chapter of NCA in the Northeast

1996
(NCA) Recognizes Need For A State Chapter

The National Children’s Alliance (NCA) recognizes a need for a state chapter in Massachusetts. The Founding Board begins organizational development.

1995
Massachusetts Legislature funds Sexual Abuse Intervention Network (SAIN)

Massachusetts Legislature funds Sexual Abuse Intervention Network (SAIN), establishing a multidisciplinary team (MDT) response to child abuse statewide and formalizing Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs). Multidisciplinary SAIN teams and CACs begin meeting to collaboratively respond to child abuse statewide.
